Minimizing Falling Objects Workers’ Comp Claims

The toppling of a box from a high shelf is one of the more common types of workers’ compensation insurance claims. It is your goal, as a business owner, to be proactive. Finding these risks and looking for ways to minimize those risks is very important. It can help to keep your insurance costs low. There is no way to avoid all accidents. However, a few tips can significantly reduce your likelihood of having numerous losses. Here is some insight.

Take Note of Your Layout workers compensation paperwork
As you walk around your business, look up. What do you notice on shelves higher than the shoulders of your workers? The more items on these top shelves, the more risks you have of facing workers’ compensation claims. There may be times when you need those items stored up high. However, consider a few tips to keep them secure.

Move Heavy Objects Lower
One of the easiest changes to make is to reduce the weight of those objects stored higher than the shoulders. For example, if you store a box of ceramic products on the top shelf, that could weight 20 or more pounds. Try positioning this lower and putting other, lighter items higher.

Place Objects Used Often Lower
The more times a worker has to climb up to access a high shelf, the more opportunity for a fall or risk. In this situation, you want to keep items you use all the time within easy reach of your workers. Reconfigure the layout of your area to accommodate this.

Store Dangerous Items at the Lowest Level
You do not want your employees having to pull chemicals from top shelves. This creates a significant risk. Be sure to position these lower, such as on the floor or near the floor. This helps to minimize any types of spills from getting into a workers’ eyes. However, if you will have children in the area, remember that you must also place these items out of their reaches.

Look at Past Problems
If you are unsure of the types of risks present, take a look at any previous claims workers filed. Do you notice any trends? Do objects fall in stockrooms and warehouses? Do they feel they need to climb on ladders to reach items? These are all indications that it may be time to make some changes.

There are many instances in which falls from heights cause workers’ compensation insurance claims. Yet, many times, you can avoid these claims. Find ways to pull the risks down towards the ground to avoid the injuries and claims.
